It was back in August 2011 that the AU Commission organized a pledging conference to alleviate the plight of more than 12 million people in the Horn of Africa. The event helped raise resources and awareness amongst AU Member States and the wider international community. According to the report presented by the AUC Commissioner for Political Affairs, Mrs. Julia Dolly Joiner, so far 350 million USD has been raised in cash and in kind. Out of this total amount, the AU member states only pledged around 50 million USD. The remaining balance was covered by the African development bank (ADB), which takes the lion’s share. Mrs. Julia said to date the AUC has allocated more than 8 Million USD for the victims of drought in Djibouti, Kenya, and Somalia, and Ethiopia. The Commissioner further urged other member states to redeem their pledges. As part of the AU’s effort to assist the victims of the famine in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, the AU Commission has opened a bank account to receive donation from African Governments, private sectors and ordinary African citizens.
