AUC Charter ready for Operations

The AUC Commissioner for Political Affairs briefed the media on the issue at the AUC Headquarter here today.

The African Charter on Democracy, Election and Governance was adopted in Addis Ababa on the 30th of January 2007. The Charter is Inspired by the objectives and principles enshrined in the Constitutive Act of the African Union which emphasizes  the significance of good governance and other related issues. Based on the agreement by the member states, the African charter on democracy, election and governance will come into force 30 days after deposit of 15 instruments of ratification. During the press briefing here at the AU Headquarters, H.E. Mrs. Julia Dolly Joiner Political Affairs Commissioner said the ratification of the charter is a significant mile stone. However, according to Mrs. Julia, the instrument is yet to inter in to force.Among the remaining countries, Togo and Mozambique have announced that they ratified the charter but they are yet to deposit the instruments. However, Mrs. Julia mentioned that the commission will not be complacent to further push other member state to ratify the charter. (AFRO FM)
